Bob Anderson, a Certified Elder Law Attorney and founder of Anderson Associates, decided to get into elder law after his father was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. Anderson’s father had the disease for 11 years. Bob, his mother, and his siblings helped to keep his father home for most of the 11 years as his disease progressed. According to Anderson, he quickly learned the living trust he made for his father early in his career was useless when it came to the services his father actually needed. "Then I learned about NAELA, which offered the solutions I was looking for," Anderson said. "So it was a real life experience dealing with a dementia related illness in my own family that opened my eyes to the valuable approach of elder law." NAELA, or the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys, is a professional association of attorneys who are dedicated to improving the quality of legal services provided to seniors and people with special needs.

Kim Winokur, senior associate attorney at Anderson Associates, said her life experience also made her want to get into elder law and disability law. Winokur has a daughter with special needs who is currently 32 years of age. "I got involved in special needs as a parent even before I was an attorney," Winokur said. "I’ve been very active in the community, worked in the court system and have been an advocate for her, so it just kind of grew into my practice."
